Marty Harrity Retires as Tee Ball Coach and Mentor
LAST UPDATED: 10 March 2010

The Sanibel Fields were busy Saturday March 6th as the first Tee Ball players of the season crowded the fields. What they didn't know was that this day would mark the end of an era. Coach Marty, would be doing his famous "Turtle" stretch for last time that day and saying farwell to the game and the kids after 25 years of coaching.

In honor of Marty's years as a coach, mentor, role model and friend all games in progress were halted as more than 200 baseball, softball and tee ball players and their parents gathered in the pavilon to say thanks and farewell. Marty has inspired so many young children to learn and love the game. It is always great to watch Marty with the batter to first base after their first hit.

Fun Fact: Sanibel's Little League was founded by Dick Muench who acted as the league commissioner for 35 years. Without his dedication and countless hours of service to Sanibel's boys and girls, the league would not have been possible. With Marty Harrity (former Sanibel Mayor, City Councilman, and Business Owner) by his side, this program has been outstanding. Both my kids John and Darby enjoyed many years of Tee-Ball, Soft Ball and Base Ball, thanks to the efforts of Dick Muench, Marty Harrity and Stewart Hitt in the snack shack!
