Before the Causeway: The Mail Boat

Prior to the Causeway being built in 1963, Sanibel and Captiva residents relied on the “Santiva” mail boat to deliver their mail to the islands. The mail boat travelled the waters of the Pine Island Sound six days a week delivering mail, provisions and ferrying passengers to the islands. The Santiva never failed to arrive-good weather or bad.
