Sanibel Island and Hurricane Gustov
LAST UPDATED: 31 August 2008

Sunday, August 31, 2008: Hurricane Gustov came the closest to Sanibel Island during high tide around 1:30 p.m. today. The waves and high waters covered the beaches and some of the dunes. Canals swelled to their seawalls but did not overflow. Rainfall has been scattered but there is no flooding on the island. The waters will need to receed to determine if any severe erosion of the beaches has occurred.

Low tides should bring many hopeful shellers out to the beaches looking for specimens. Two weeks ago, Tropical Storm Fay brought many seashells into the shallow waters and Gustov should bring more of the same.
