Community Housing and Resources (CHR) is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable workforce housing on Sanibel. CHR was formed in 1979 and has been serving Sanibel for 38 years. Sanibel’s affordable housing program was the first of its kind in the state of Florida.
Each year, CHR's main fundraising event is a Mardi Gras themed celebration. Attendees throughout Southwest Florida enjoy an evening filled with New Orlean's style food and festivities. So grab your Mardi Gras beads and best mask and join in the fun for a great cause.
As of 2020, CHR maintains 74 rental units throughout the islands from Studio Apartments to 3 bedroom homes. The majority of CHR residents are full-time workers on Sanibel Island who have met basic requirements before applying for CHR housing. Residents are required to pay rent at a reduced rate determined by their annual income. More than 50% of CHR's funding comes from Grants, Individual Donations and their biggest fundraiser of the year: Mardi Gras.
