Yes, it's that time of year again when shell collectors gather from around the world to display some of the most extraordinary collections of univalves and bivalves (sea shells). Why Sanibel Island? Sanibel is one of the World's best shelling beaches because of the number of species of shells that our surrounding waters support.
Did you know that there are two different fields dedicated solely to the study of shells and mollusks. If so, you would know that a Malacologist specializes in the study of the animal or mollusk which makes the shell's exoskeleton and a Conchologist specializes in the study of the shell itself.
If you are interested in Malacology, Conchology or just want to see some beautiful shells visit Sanibel's Shell Fair located at the Sanibel Community Center.
Fun Fact: The shell pictured is a Slit Shell also known as Pleurotomariidae, and are characterized by their long slit at the base of the whirl. These shells are found between 600 and 800 feet deep along the continental shelf in tropical and sub tropical waters.
