In 2001, a group of Sanibel and Captiva citizens came together to address the need for improved healthcare for children in Lee County forming SanCap Cares. Their efforts grew each year making the dream of a specialized children's hospital a tangible reality. During their 2013 fundraiser, all contributions to the hospital campaign, including the $1.3 million raised during their annual event doubled to $2.6 million through the $20 million matching grant challenge offered by B. Thomas Golisano. His generosity will be celebrated in perpetuity when the hospital was named the Colisano Children's Hospital at HealthPark in his honor.
The mission of SanCap Cares is to raise money and awareness for Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida at HealthPark in Fort Myers, Florida.
The inspiration behind the SanCap Cares fundraising efforts comes from a little boy named Matthew Marinello who, at just three months old, stopped breathing and was transported in an adult ambulance to the Children's Hospital at HealthPark. This sparked the passion in a group of Sanibel and Captiva mothers to raise funds to ensure children in our community have the access to the pediatric specialized healthcare that they need.
