Loggerhead Cay

This Gulf front vacation complex offers 168 units. With the minimum rental period of 7 days and the size of the complex, Loggerhead is a very popular vacation rental destination attracting families for weekly stays as well as seasonal residents. Loggerhead Cay has a large olympic size heated swimming pool, tennis courts, a club house, grill and picnic areas and all buildings have an elevator. The East Gulf Drive location is close to the Causeway, Sanibel's Historic Lighthouse and has easy access to the bike path that parallels the property.

Loggerhead Cay History: In 1972 pre-construction units sold for $39,000 and most units came with avocado green or gold appliances and shag carpet - classic 70s decor'. At the time, Bob Buntrock was "Mr. Loggerhead" since he sold the units, was the Vice President of Loggerhead and also wrote their newsletter: The Loggerhead Log. Past Presidents of Loggerhead Cay include: Bob Buntrock, Martin Sullivan, Franklin Butler, Beverly Horr, William Baker, Lucie Hall, Hardy Hewit Marvin Semibold, Malcolm Holtje, Dennis Zeek and Sharon Murphy.

It was high density units like Loggerhead that triggered the residents of Sanibel Island to look at their future. Since Sanibel at that time was under the governance of Lee County, development restrictions allowed for thousands of units to be built all over the island. Once the ferry was replaced by a bridge linking the remote island to the rest of the world, construction was taking place all over Sanibel. In 1974 Sanibel became a city and elected Porter Goss Sr. as the first mayor. This move to incorporate allowed Sanibel to control building codes, restrictions, conservation lands and ultimately its destiny. Today Sanibel still has 5 City Council members, of which one is appointed Mayor. All of these positions are un-paid.

FUN FACT: According to SCCF statistics, in 2014 there were 535 Loggerhead Turtle nests on Sanibel & Captiva Islands. Each summer over 100 volunteers walk our beaches daily to help gather data and monitor this threatened species.
