Cracker Fest - Sanibel Island
LAST UPDATED: 25 October 2014

Cracker Fest began in 2008. This even focuses on raising funds for S.T.A.R.T.

S.T.A.R.T. stands for Solutions To Avoid Red Tide. Red Tide can occur when an elevated algal bloom of dinoflagellates occurs in coastal waters. The bloom causes a drop in the oxygen levels of the water and can become irritating as toxins disperse into the air. Elevated levels of nutrients can trigger a bloom.

What is Cracker Fest aka Crackerfest? It is a down home cookin' and eating and dancing celebration that features a live and silent auction. Each year the musical guests are a big hit. The traditional Southern Florida Cracker style food includes: Smoked Mullet (a real treat), Collard Greens, and Corn Bread.

The Sanibel Captiva Chapter of START (Solutions to Avoid Red Tide) benefits each year from the annual Cracker Fest Celebration. Come celebrate Florida's cultural heritage while raising awareness and financial support for your local water quality and conservation organization. Don't miss this year's bash, complete with dining, line dancing lessons, auction and enjoying the company of friends and family!

FUN FACT: A Florida Cracker was term used to identify the cowboys who drove cattle across the state of Florida. Cracker described the sound that their whips made as they drove the cows. Punta Rassa was the destination for many cattlemen as they sold cows to Cuba often being paid in gold for their livestock.
