October 15th, 2011 marks the beginning of Stone Crab season. The shores off of Sanibel Island will be dotted with stone crab trap bouys as commercial fishermen hunt these prized crabs. Here's to a great season for fishermen and we look forward to Stone Crab Claws on local Sanibel & Captiva menus. Stone Crabs are legal for harvest from October 15 to May 15. The best practice is to harvest only one claw from each crab. Removal of both claws increases the mortality rates of the crab.Claws must be greater than 2.75" long from the tip to the first joint.
