The Sanctuary
LAST UPDATED: 01 January 2020

The first known inhabitants on the 465 acres of land that today is called The Sanctuary were the Calusa Indians, followed by the Spanish, and then the Cubans. In 1920, this area had a population of about 50. The farming homesteaders were hit hard by storms in 1921 and 1926 which was later named “The Great Miami Hurricane” which essentially decimated the soil. Fast forward to April 17, 1992 when the official groundbreaking was held for what is now called The Sanctuary at Wulfert that boasts 272 homes and an award-winning golf course with clubhouse and amenities.

This community offers the ultimate in privacy in an exclusive tropical setting. Situated adjacent to the world renowned J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Sanctuary is a paradise for lovers of nature. The property features an Arthur Hills designed golf course that encompasses 6,657 yards traversing beautiful lakes and preserves providing panoramic views of the mangrove forests and Pine Island Sound. The clubhouse is the hub of social functions and amenities include tennis, pool and a fitness center. Club membership is not a requirement for home ownership at the Sanctuary.

Housing options at the Sanctuary include single family homes, detached villas and low-rise condos. The golf course is recognized by the Audubon Society as a cooperative course and is the only private course on Sanibel.
