Sanibel Summer Reptiles
LAST UPDATED: 05 August 2006

Lately, it seems that the island has been crawling with reptiles. In the past two weeks, we have encountered Box Turtles, Snapping Turtles, Yellow Eared Sliders, Black Racers, and Iguanas all in our yard or pool. It makes for great fun and excitement trying to capture the juvenile snapping turtles as they swim evasively in the pool. Not to mention the exercise as I run circles around my pool with a net in hand. So far in the past 24 hours, the count is two snapping turtles and one box turtle.

If you happen to run across a beautiful Box Turtle, please alert SCCF's Wildlife Management Department. They will come to you and retrieve the turtle, tag it and return it to the exact location where you encountered it.
